Had a little scare on our way to Richmond, VA. Taking I81 which is hilly as heck. Just outside Roanoke, the Allison keypad starts dinging and then goes blank, except for two vertical division signs. None of the buttons work. Automatically assumed in my panic that it was stuck in 6th. I was afraid it would bog down exiting 81. So, I did what any other 1999 Newell owner would do….call Richard of course. He corrected my description and told me those were called Cateyes and I was screwed. Ok not exactly. He agreed with my decision to not stop until I found a safe spot. Our planned campground was out in Buchanon (back in site). I decided to press on to Richmond. I knew worst case there’s a decent Allison service place. Not stopping brought about an interesting issue to a 60 plus guy that loves coffee and needed a bathroom. I sacrificed a couple bicycle water bottles as my wife relayed them to the bathroom. I decided to do a trial run coming to a stop in a rest stop. Luckily it downshifted and went back up again leaving the parking lot. Arrived at the Allison dealer after closing. Parked, shut it off and began diagnosing based on Richard’s suggestion. Spot on as usual. I plugged and reseated the plug on the back of the pad and on the TCM. started the coach and the pad came back to life. I looked up how to check codes with the pad (Richard) and it threw a 2312: shift selector or cable fault to TCM, Cateyes may display. Since we had a long way to go on this trip, I decided to have their tech do a diagnostic the next morning. They basically found exactly what Richard said in between telling me none of these parts (keypad, TCM) were in stock. Too old. We cleared the code and I thanked them by scratching out a $450 check, that hurt. So I left still afraid it will happen again and looking up where I can send the computer and keypad for rebuild just in case. I’ve attached their diagnostic sheet if that helps. 50 miles so far and it’s working fine! Fingers crossed.

Coach has been sittin in storage since beginning of November. Cranked fine, ran fine.

Went to crank it up today. Turn the key and…. Nothing. No crank. Isolated each the chassis batteries and checked voltage and they were about 13.6 House was 13.6. Batteries were merged

Checked voltage at the starter and it was 13.6 positive and ground with the meter ruling out bad battery cables

Checked the starter relay where the rear start switch is, red on the small wire of the relay, and black to ground on the battery and turned the rear start switch. It went from 2.7mv (switch off) to 6.0mv (switch on) and 22mv (switch in crank position). I would’ve thought this would have had volts not milli volts going thru it.

I’m thinking the relay is bad?? I’m going to jump the relay next time I’m out where I store it. But does anyone have the part number for this?? So I can have a spare?? Or confirm that it’s bad? Or can anyone shed any other light on the subject??
It overheated in spectacular fashion. So sad because the Detroit had very low miles. Now I’m deciding what to replace it with since it got so hot it’s not rebuildable.
Does anyone have the part number for the 90s allison ht 740 output shaft seal? I had oil coming out of the weep hole, tried to get the part from an allison dealer/shop but the serial number only pulls up the long bore output housing with the retarded, no the shorter coach /tour bus version and will argue with you that the bus housing style doesn't exist. I attached a picture of the seals, top is the one they sold me, bottom is thr one I pulled out of the housing behind the yoke shaft and in front of the bearings.

I'm about to put the whole thing back together with the old seal cleaned up and oiled, reassemble everything and limp to Vegas, because we are 80 miles south of Elko, NV and I can't get any help here. We are going to pull over at every rest area and check fluid levels and top off accordingly.

Oh, if anyone needs it, the retaining nut on the yoke is 2-3/4 and it took my 1" pnuematic to Crack the torque.

Question here for everyone. Have you ever changed the crankcase breather filter on your CAT engines? I think CAT only had that filter on the ACERT engines. The reason I ask is that it can get clogged and thereby increase the crankcase pressure. If the pressure gets too high it can pop the oil filler cap.

I am replacing my cap, because its broken. At the same time I'm doing the crankcase breather filter. You can't take it out the top of the filter housing because it is just under the bathroom floor. You have to take the entire housing off to get the filter out.

A CAT technician, when asked about this filter, said that the filter us a service item that gets changed with every oil service. Mine looks to have never been changed. We'll see when I get it off.

Hey everyone, I have a lubrucation question. What is the CAT recommended oil for a CAT C15 SDP Acert engine. Its in a 2009 Newell. The coach nameplate just says DELVAC 1, but you can get it in 15W 40, 15W 30, or 5W 40. Seems that The nameplate should have specified this.

Hello, I have a 2008 Newell and the CAC is leaking. The original manufacturer was Positech International, but they seem to now be out of business. Does anyone know of a company that can build a replacement? I would prefer not to rebuild the one I have if possible due to it being 23 years old, possibly. It may have been changed out in the past before I owned the coach. The CAC has been painted black and it looks like a bomber can job and not a factory job.

Also if anyone has a drawing of the unit that would allow another manufacturer or shop to build one, that would be exceptional!

I have a couple of photos of the leaking around the frame supporting the CAC. Seems the pressure has blown out the sealant that was used when it was installed. The area must be somewhat confined to be able to build pressure. Sorry, I tried to upload a video, but system doesn't allow it.

Any advice is certainly appreciated!

Our coach (1976) was born with a Cummins 555 and allison mt41 trans.

The 555 is impossible to get parts for so I am planning a heart transplant.

I have a 24 valve 5.9 cummins. That is slightly tuned up. I feel this is going to be a good power plant for the bus with a bump in hp/to over the 555.

I have a couple transmissions I am looking into. The mt41 is not going to handle the torque of the new engine.

I currently have a lead on an mt645cr. Any experts in here that can tell me if this would be a good trans for this swap?

Does anyone happen to have a part # for the drive axle bolt and nut? I make the genius decision to run up a 6 mile 6% grade just east of Butte, MT, without enough fuel in the main, and the aux closed off. Starved the engine of fuel since it all ran to the back of the tank. We did get that resolved by priming the secondary fuel filter inlet, after a few tries.

After a very long night on the shoulder of I90, 1.2 miles from Homestake Westbound Park area, StateFarm finally got a heavy wrecker out to pull me up the hill to flat ground. He pulled the drive axle from the differential, and in so doing buggered up one of the bolts and nuts. Now I am leaking fluid and he has yet to source a replacement.

A) I don't think I should drive on this after reading differential fluid nightmares, so we are stuck.

B) I am assuming if I knock out this bolt to take it into an auto shop to match it, I'm going to be dumping a lot of oil in the interim.

So, does anyone have the part number off hand?

Thanks, ~ Marcus.
