Rockwell/Meritor ADB Disc Brake Inspection
#1

I just posted up a video showing my inspection of the Rockwell/Meritor ADB disc brake inspection on my youtube channel.
Overall the condition of my brakes were surprisingly good. The pads looked good as well as the rotors. The only difficulty was the bottom pin that secures the slide pins were stuck and took quite a bit of work to get them freed up so I could get them out. I damaged them so that they were not able to be re-used. Before I damaged them, I did check and ordered the replacement parts and had them in hand before I really went after them with implements of destruction.
I think that I am going to go ahead and order new slide pins and bushings for next time, and go ahead and change them. Now it should be easier to do the work since most of the time I spent getting those bottom retainer pins out.

We have 4 Rockwell Meritor calipers on our bus and I just finished a complete overhaul of all 4 including new chambers. You have the current slide pins which are the upgraded version from the original pins which used O-rings. Rockwell did however add a additional single string that goes on the top pin only to help return the caliper. I'm not familiar with that spring that goes between the pins. To me this doesn't seen to serve any purpose at all.

Nice work Jack, I just ordered the new pins for mine. I was wondering about the o-rings, I saw them on a lot of the diagrams. Seems like that would hold crap on the pins once it gets in there. I guess that is why they got rid of it. My pins were not in bad shape other than in the middle where the crud had gathered around the retaining pin. Over time I am sure this is going to allow the chrome to peel off so that is why I decided to go ahead and replace the pins.

I will have the new pins hand for when I have the ambition to go back in and replace them. I don't want to wait too long as it might be a pain to replace those retainer pins again if they get stuck.

The spring is an anti-rattle device, keeps the caliper from rattling/chatter on the pins.
