Help with a classic that pulls!!
#1

Good afternoon all,  My wife and I bought coach 210 in late August, it's a 1989 and in great shape, both mechanically and the living quarters.

WITH one exception!!  It pulls to the right.  Not so bad it wants to make a right had turn but it's bad enough that if you don't keep pressure on the steering wheel to the left the entire bus will be on the shoulder in a 1/8th of a mile at 65 MPH.  We have had the suspension, brakes, and alignment checked all good.  Actually great according to one tech.  We have jacked up the front end to see if the steering gear want to pull one way or the other and it doesn't.  The pull is worse under braking BUT all brakes are good and nothing is dragging.  We have driven it about 700 miles this way so if it was a dragging brake we would know for sure!

At this point any suggestion would be great!  We live in SE NE and it's 40 years old I really don't want to take it all the way to OK and quite frankly spend what I can guess is quite the premium to have Newell work on it.

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Was the alignment for all axles? Can you post the printout?

I would swap the steer tires from side to side and see what happens. Sounds strange but after massive efforts to fix a pull, an old truck guy suggested this. It worked.

Skyking has a post about an alignment shop not too far from you that might be your best bet.

Hello Ryan,

I have coach #744, I chased a handling problem for years until I met Bill Rajewski the owner of Perry Legend Collision Center in Columbia Missouri. I call him the alignment whisperer. He had my coach figured out and “straightened”out in less than two days.

Give him a call, he’ll probably diagnose over the phone asking you to run your palm over each tire… With mine the drives wanted to go one way and the tag the other… I was caught in the middle chasing it everywhere.

Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!

One more sanity check that a trad alignment will not identify. Measure from the center of the steer to the center of the drive on both sides. If the front axle is cocked it will show up in the measurement

Thank you all for the quick responses.
We did swap the steer tires and it changed nothing.
I didn't get a print out from the "alignment" shop.  To be honest they came across as not wanting to work to hard at fixing/diagnosing anything.
Their first suggestion was replace tie rod ends and drag links cause the boots where cracked/torn.
The first shop that checked it out was a very local independent that I trust and I knew he could not align the coach, but I trust him to make sure it was safe to drive.  He said everything under the front was tight and straight, and the brakes applied evenly.
I do need to measure the steer to the drive and verify for myself.

Couple questions what PSI should the tag be set at?  Could that make a difference?
Second what is the top regulator for?  Sorry first RV let alone first Class A.  I am very mechanically inclined just new to the HD world.

No one, even Newell, cares about your coach like you do. I have never been completely happy with the alignments done on my Newells. I wasn’t comfortable with my redneck methods so I would take it to an alignment shop, including one here in Florida that is well recommended. It would drive worse than how I set it up on my backyard pad.

If you are handy, I can teach you how to use string, a digital level, and plumb bobs to measure ALL the alignment settings on your coach.

Just sayin, my approach saves a lot of money and angst.

Ryan. On 316 one of the regulators controls the air powered trans gear selector and/or the transmission modulator. The other controls tag axle air bag pressure. As I remember I set air bag pressure at 25- 35 psi. There is info on this board detailing that.
