Series 60 engine - MikeStatesville - 11-13-2025

Is it normal for the S60 detroit to whine?  I guess could be the gears in front of engine…

Mike thats going to be a tough one to answer unless a trained ear is standing by it, I will say the Detroit series 60 is LOUD period. Are you sure its not alternator wine? Take a big screw driver and put it to various places on the engine with your ear on the other end and you'll find the exact location. Keep us informed on what you find. Welcome to the group.

Sounds like good advice! I will do that.  I am an old man and getting dumber by the day, so sometimes I don’t think of things to try.  This is my first post so thanks for the welcome!

To add to what Jack said.

First, I totally agree that the S60 is a LOUD engine, especially if standing directly behind the engine. Lots of gear noise. Could you be hearing the turbo whine?

Do you have the huge 50DN alternator or a normal size alternator?

Could be hydraulic system whine. To me I cannot hear any whine from the Detroit but my hydraulic system whines, especially when the fan comes on.

I have a small alternator.  I tried the screwdriver deal to listen to various components, hydraulic pump on front of engine, gears, alternator. No joy. All good. Is there another hydraulic pump somewhere?  I can hear a whine while standing at rear of bus.  Not turbo whine, I am familiar with that sound.  Thank you for your input!

Only 1 hyd pump

Check the fan motor. Listen to the fan control unit. Fan control unit on mine is bolted at the rear left of the engine, on the vertical frame, follow the hydraulic hoses. May also want to check the air compressor on the passenger side of the engine as well as the fuel pump mounted to the back of the air compressor.
