Lubrication "weight" of DELVAC1 - xGE_97 - 10-04-2025

Hey everyone, I have a lubrucation question. What is the CAT recommended oil for a CAT C15 SDP Acert engine. Its in a 2009 Newell. The coach nameplate just says DELVAC 1, but you can get it in 15W 40, 15W 30, or 5W 40. Seems that The nameplate should have specified this.

Regards,
Bob

My gut instinct is nothing less than 15w40 as an all around weather lubricant. Since it is a rear engine in a confined space, the heat would keep me from thinking about anything less than that weight. 5w40 seems a very light weight oil for that stout engine. Your best info would be to look at what Cat recommends.

Oil viscosity is dictated by Cat but there is usually a range depending on where you are operating your coach, more importantly what temperatures you will be operating it in. Generally most run 15w40 unless you do alot of northern driving in the winter then you could go with 5w40. Really the 5w40 and 15w40 give you the same hot temperature protection, the lower number is for winter operation, so the 5w is going to give you a lower viscosity to help with running in cold temps.

One thing to remember, oil always gets thinner as it get hotter. Oil additive packages though can help with reducing wear even though the oil gets thinner, this is where the real science is working to protect engines better these days.

If you want to know more about oil than you ever thought about, this guy gives a pretty good run down all about oil:

Ok. Thanks, guys. Yep, CAT recommends 15W40 for the C15 engines. The tech said he thought they used 15W40 in all CAT engines. He didn't know why someone would specify the Delvac1 over Delvac. I am waiting for a response from Newell on their use of Delvac1.
