Dean is correct. 1983 was the first year Newell began using the 'new' accounting system which assigned a 'coach number' to each new coach starting with Coach 1. At first I assumed that all the 1983 coaches were included but based on the data I have, it appears that the coaches that were built in 1982 as 1983 models were NOT included. So Coach 1 was apparently the first coach Newell began building AFTER January 1, 1983.
Therefore, there was never a coach number assigned to any coach built prior to January, 1983. The way the factory designated pre-coach number Newells is by Year and the last two digits which was the sequence number for that model year. Until 1990, the VIN or Serial Number used the the year model sequence number as the last two digits of the VIN.
